The St. Mary’s River in Barbeau, Michigan, made the most beautiful backdrop for Hanna and Landon’s Northern Michigan engagement photos. Just south of Sault Ste. Marie in the Upper Peninsula, this quiet spot is full of meaning and natural beauty. From wading into the river to sharing a champagne pop at sunset, their engagement session captured everything we love about Northern Michigan- relaxed, timeless, and completely true to them.

Hanna & Landon’s Northern Michigan Engagement Photos in Barbeau, Michigan

Back in April, I had the honor of photographing my sister’s proposal on the farm where she and her fiancé, Landon, first met. When it came time to plan their engagement photos, she knew she wanted a location that felt meaningful and beautiful. The Upper Peninsula has always been special to our family, we’ve spent countless summers “Up North” since we were kids , so choosing Barbeau, Michigan, along the St. Mary’s River near the Sault Ste. Marie area, was the perfect fit.

By the time July rolled around, we were gifted with the most gorgeous Northern Michigan evening light (even if the mosquitos didn’t go easy on us!). Hanna and Landon’s Barbeau engagement session included a playful champagne pop, sweet moments together standing in the St. Mary’s River, and plenty of detail shots of her beautiful ring. Between the river views and the glow of sunset, their Upper Peninsula engagement photos captured the natural, rustic charm of Northern Michigan.

As a photographer, it’s always special to document milestones, but capturing my own sister’s engagement session was unforgettable. These two share such a genuine, joyful connection, and every laugh and quiet moment came through so clearly in their portraits. Their photos weren’t just about pretty backdrops, they were about celebrating love, family, and the next chapter of their story as they prepare for their wedding next September.

Engagement photos in the Upper Peninsula are truly one of a kind. From the charm of small towns like Barbeau to the views along the St. Mary’s River and the beauty of the Sault Ste. Marie area, Northern Michigan offers timeless backdrops in every season. Whether you’re popping champagne by the river, cozying up at the water’s edge, or walking hand in hand at golden hour, your engagement session should feel like you. If you’re looking for an engagement photographer in Northern Michigan or the Upper Peninsula, I’d love to help capture your story in a way that feels genuine, relaxed, and true to you.

Easy and Natural Engagement Photo Pose Ideas

Engagement photos don’t have to feel stiff or overly posed. My style is all about relaxed direction, gentle prompts, and letting couples enjoy the moment. Hanna and Landon’s Barbeau engagement session is a perfect example, some of my favorite photos came when they were simply laughing and forgetting the camera was even there.

Here are a few natural pose ideas that work beautifully for Northern Michigan and Upper Peninsula engagement photos:

• Walking hand in hand along the riverbank - natural movement that feels relaxed.

• Popping champagne at golden hour - fun, celebratory, and full of candid laughter.

• Standing barefoot in the St. Mary’s River - playful, romantic, and unique to the U.P. setting.

• Close up of the engagement ring on a pine branch - timeless detail you’ll always want to remember.

• Wrapped up together at sunset - cozy, romantic, and the perfect ending shot.
